History on Fort Amherst Chatham Kent.
In 1667 the Dutch raided the River Medway and attacked Chatham’s Royal Dockyard.
During the devastating attack.
During the mid 1800s there was considerable alarm in the United Kingdom generated
by the territorial ambitions of Emperor Napoleon III of France, a traditional enemy,
and the growing power of imperial Germany
Tonbridge’s first castle was a simple fort of earth and timber, thrown up – like
hundreds of others – by Norman invaders for self-protection
The earliest know part of the system is the former main line railway tunnel which
was opened on 5th October 1863 by the Kent Coast Railway
Reputation as, according to The Guinness Book of Records, the most
haunted village in England that is cherished by most of the residents.
Gunpowder, the first explosive, was being made in the town by 1573. Water-power was
needed to drive the machinery; and the first factory (the Home Works) developed along
Westbrook, the watercourse which feeds Faversham Creek
